Garden & Facilities Caretaker

OVERVIEW

The Garden & Facilities Caretaker reports to the Operations Director (OD) and Garden Steward (GS) and works alongside other staff as directed to steward Boxerwood’s 20-acre woodland garden, The Meadow Natural Burial Ground, and the facilities/infrastructure therein. This is a part time (20-30hr/wk) position, and actual hours per week fluctuate seasonally. Pay: $20-$24/hour, is commensurate with experience.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Garden Care. Provide care and maintenance throughout the woodland garden:

  • Assist Garden Steward in various tasks 

  • Tend garden demonstration spaces (prune, weed, mow, water, plant, mulch, weed eat, judicious use of herbicides, chain saw work, etc)

  • Implement tasks in support of Boxerwood’s stewardship plans and policies as directed by the GS

  • Maintain a safe working environment by following Boxerwood G/F policies and procedures

Facilities Maintenance. Complete routine maintenance tasks:

  • Remove trash and recycling from the premises weekly; check porta-potty cleanliness and supplies weekly

  • Monitor and maintain Boxerwood’s composting stations

  • Conduct monthly inspections of NEWTS, the wastewater treatment system

  • Conduct routine maintenance on equipment (truck, mower, tractor, etc.)

  • Maintain structures throughout the gardens like paths, footbridges, PlayTrail monitoring and maintenance of features to ensure visitor safety

  • Assist with other maintenance and infrastructural activities as requested

Education and Community Engagement. Support learning and visitor engagement:

  • Assist with the delivery of educational programs as requested by the Program Director

  • Interact with visitors and volunteers, answering questions about the garden and Boxerwood’s mission

  • Support the preparation of garden spaces for community activities and educational programming as needed

  • Contribute to the seasonal clean-up of gardens and shared spaces

GENERAL STAFF EXPECTATIONS

  • Keep track of your hours and the tasks to which they are allocated

  • Work proactively and independently while also collaborating with the garden team

  • Participate in monthly garden team meetings to assess progress and adjust priorities as needed

  • In coordination with the OD & GS, create personal work goals aligned with the Strategic Plan, Stewardship Master Plan, and other guiding docs as applicable

  • Be supportive of BEA fundraisers, activities, and events; be an ambassador for BEA in the broader community

  • Participate in shared organizational duties as needed (i.e. staff meetings, seasonal clean-ups)

  • Other duties as assigned.

IDEAL SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Clean driving record

  • Comfort with maintenance & running of power tools and riding mowers

  • Experience in horticulture, landscaping, or related field

  • Some general handyman know how is desirable yet not required (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc)
