Waste Busters

Waste Busters is a Boxerwood-facilitated student-run school composting program. During the 2023-2024 school year, five local elementary schools kept 7,423 pounds of food waste out of the Rockbridge County landfill and instead turned that trash into treasure, creating healthy compost soil to be used in school gardening and planting projects. This work is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) via the County of Rockbridge.

As part of the Waste Buster program, students collect and weigh uneaten food and milk in the cafeteria each day. The table below is a record of how much food waste (lbs) has been diverted from the landfill at each school by day. Thank you to the students who collect this data!

Disclaimer: Although in general schools participate each day Mon-Fri, schools might not participate every single day for a variety of reasons at the discretion of the school. These reasons include weather, school events, technical difficulties, etc.
