Area residents are invited to bring their family and friends to Boxerwood on Saturday, December 13, between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. for our annual Gifts of Nature program.
In this hands-on, outdoor program, attendees will be able to craft decorations that feed the winter birds and spruce up their home, inside and out.
“December is a time we especially turn our thoughts to loved ones,” said Boxerwood Early Education Coordinator, Jess Sullivan, program host. “And of course that also includes caring for our feathered friends, the birds!”
A holiday tradition, the simple pleasures of the program unite young and old in shared conversation and creativity. As in years past, Boxerwood will provide vines, cones, winter berries, and greenery, as well as suet, raffia, ribbon and other project supplies.
“Everyone makes something different,” said Jess. “It’s quite a marvel to see what treasures we make from nature’s gifts. Many folks like to twist honeysuckle and grapevine into wreaths or swags, then tie on bird healthy treats, like cranberry garlands, dried fruit kabobs, and peanut-buttered pinecones.”
The cost of this program is $10 cash or check per family. No RSVP is required. In the spirit of the season, Boxerwood asks families to also bring one type of wildlife food to share with other participants. Examples include birdseed, nuts in shells, dried fruits, popcorn, or fresh cranberries.
The program takes place outdoors in the big pavilion and on the nearby lawn in front of the Boxerwood Lodge, so participants should dress for the weather. “We’ll also have a wood fire and warm cider to help keep everyone warm and spirits high,” said Jess.
In the event of rain, the program will be postponed until Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14. Boxerwood is located at 963 Ross Road, less than a mile outside of Lexington. For more information or weather updates, visit our website, Facebook page, or call (540) 463-2697.
