About the event
The Backyard Compost Challenge is a Boxerwood citizen science project that asks the question: “How many pounds of food waste could Rockbridge County households keep out of the landfill if given the chance?” This 10-week project will begin its 6th annual cycle in March 2026. The deadline to register is Monday, February 23rd.
Each year, more than 80 local households track and report the amount of food waste they divert to their backyard composters. The households come from Buena Vista, Lexington, and Rockbridge County. This project is funded by a competitive grant from Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VA DEQ) in partnership with local jurisdictions.
