The Garden Story
A brief history
1951: Family physician Dr. Robert Munger and his wife Betty Munger purchased this property, formerly farmland. They raised three children and a slew of family dogs, many of them boxers, which inspired family friends to name the place “Boxerwood.”

1957: Dr. Munger became intensely interested in horticulture and began landscaping the gardens with thousands of unique tree seedlings he collected from around the world.

1996: Dr. Munger's garden successors, Hunter Mohring and KB Bailey, opened Boxerwood to the public.

1999: Hunter and KB founded the nonprofit charitable organization, Boxerwood Education Association. BEA’s mission is to educate and inspire people of all ages to be environmentally responsible stewards of the Earth.

Today: BEA partners with all local school divisions and other like-minded organizations to deliver award-winning environmental education programs throughout Rockbridge County. BEA maintains this Nature Center and Woodland Garden as an outdoor campus for many of its programs, and as a place for all to wander, play, contemplate, and enjoy nature.
