Boxerwood Nature Center & Woodland Garden

Free Surface Wetland

freesurface

In this wetland, water is at or above the level of the gravel. Since it has been exposed to the UV Light, there is no further danger of contamination. Like in a pond, the plants use even more of the remaining nutrients. Water is used in photosynthesis and transpired into the air. Frogs, fish, newts, and other aquatic life forms can flourish here. A self-sustaining pond ecosystem will probably develop over time.

Water leaves this wetland for three possible destinations.

Follow the water: Source---> Septic Tanks --->Recirculating Filtration System---> Greenhouse (Subsurface Wetland, UV Light, Free Surface Wetland) ---> Discharge Site
