As part of partnership between elementary and middle schools and Boxerwood, area fifth and sixth graders and their teachers have been taking learning out of the classroom and into the field. The interdisciplinary program emphasizes hands-on investigations along creeks and rivers near each participating school. School programs serve students from all three school divisions in the Rockbridge area.
“Students not only learn about local water systems; in many cases they also design and carry out water quality improvement projects related to their findings. The program fosters both intellectual inquiry and responsible citizenship in a real-world context." (Elise Sheffield)
Watershed Investigators determine water quality
of streams close by their schools. They use both
chemical and biological tests. Other waterside activities may include art, poetry, mathematics, and local history.
Each September, some students extend their watershed learining as they travelled to the Chesapeake Bay.
This fall, students at Maury River Middle School took part in Project Next, learning activities led by Boxerwood staff in an afternoon program two days a week. They investigated local streams with water testing and practiced mapping with GPS equipment.
