Project NEST

Inquiry in the Schoolyard -
Sept. 15 & 16, 2008

 

 A program of Boxerwood Education Association and Washington and Lee Teacher Education Program with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training (NOAA B-Wet)

 Project NEST OBJECTIVES for participants: 

bullet

Develop an appreciation of inquiry as a pedagogical method for critical thinking

bullet

Recognize specific potential in each schoolyard for supporting gr. 2 – 4 science Standards of Learning, especially those for Scientific Investigation, Living Systems, Life Processes, Earth Cycles, and Resources

bullet

Increase use of local and internet-based resources that support schoolyard inquiry  

bullet

Adopt a reasonable plan for outside inquiry at home school this fall

bullet

Create a unit and/or lesson plans(s) tailored to the schoolyard in support of that plan

bullet

Develop a student/materials management strategy for effective outside investigations

bullet

Identify one possible schoolyard-based service-learning project for the spring

bullet

Create a collegial network support and idea-sharing among NEST peers

bullet

Share best information from workshop with other interested teachers at home school
